Have you seen the show Hoarders on the A&E channel? Each episode follows two people with hoarding issues. And the word “issues” here doesn’t come close to doing it justice. Typically, it appears as if a giant scooped up their homes, inserted large quantities of dirt and old food, and then vigorously shook it upside-down before setting it back in its place. Their hoarding is so out of control that a family intervention ensues often because they’re on the brink of having their children removed by CPS. And yet these people typically remain in denial about their problem being a “serious” problem. They frequently argue that it’s a lifestyle choice. Episodes usually end with a cleaner house and a shrink that tries to resolve the root cause of the issue.

Obviously, these cases are extreme, but nonetheless, the homes are both fascinating and frightening to me. As I watch the show, I find myself looking around my own home. I notice stacks of “whatever” that we’ve ignored for weeks. One of the biggest drawbacks of living in a city is lack of space in our home. And after we had Emi, it quickly went downhill as we found ourselves drowning in baby goods. Our current home can go from clean to cluttered, literally, in a matter of minutes.
The show has scared me into keeping a more tidy home. It’s gotten to the point where I actually interfere with my daughter playing. While she’s taking out the Lego’s, I’m right behind her putting them back in the box. Same thing happens at reading time, I basically shadow her and while she takes a book out, I put the other one back in. To me, I feel like I’m saving myself from cleaning up later. To my husband, he feels as though I’m more worried about the cleaning process than enjoying the moment.
Lately, my husband has banned me from playing with Emi because he says it’s not playing. Obviously he has no concept of multitasking. Tyler comes from the school of make mess to the point of stepping over things and then clean it up all at one time. I’m more of a pick up as you go along type of gal. Tomato – tomahto, people.
Hoarders has changed us for the better. If you find yourself needing motivation to clean, tune in to an episode of Hoarders and you’ll find yourself happily dusting the blinds (the most evil of all chores).

Oh my gosh, I’ve GOT to watch this show! Maybe it’ll make me feel good about my clutter!

I never dust the blinds. Instead, when they get filthy enough to be dangerous I just rip them offa the wall and throw them in the trash. It’s my excuse for having the cheap kind:)

We have the messiest house ever, and it drives me nuts, but there is absolutely NO storage whatsoever. Joy of city living? It’s worse since the baby too – but what a nightmare the constant clutter! And we’ve gotten rid of loads too!

This show amazes me, for I can’t imagine how people actually let it get this bad. How do they live??? It’s beyond me.
And Francesca – So great to connect with you on Twitter. Looking forward to blogging with you!

It was really great connecting with you too, Heather! You have seriously inspired me to get back into blogging again. (I have been on and off again since about December.)
I had forgotten how much I enjoy the conversations and friendships forged through the computer. Thanks for reminding me.
Talk soon!

I was a foster care worker and worked with a lady because of a dirty home, her child was in risk of being removed as it just was not sanitary. I was not fun going for visit their, I never sat down, usually rocked my feet back and forth, to keep the cockroaches off of them and was just really grateful at the time that I have pretty much no sense of smell. It was disgusting.

Ooh, how can you even watch that show? Just the thought of it gives me the willies.

There are no words.
I seriously hope that you just told your husband that the recorder was “broken”.

Every Monday night, I “deep”clean some room in our house and my husband knows exactly what I’ve been up to, watching Hoarders. He’s actually okay with it since the house looks great!

Whenever my neatfreak husband gets a bit annoyed by the mess, I switch on Hoarders and things don’t look too bad!
Honestly, though, these people have huge, huge issues to let their homes get to that point. Really quite sad.

I know – I too am fascinated and horrified by hoarders. And by the way, I live in Brooklyn. . and I happen to live ACROSS THE HALL FROM AN HONEST TO GOD HOARDER. I’ve only seen glimpses. But seriously, we’re talking newspapers up to the ceiling style hoarding. Wild.

Amazing! First hand knowledge of a hoarder. You seriously should call into the show and see if you can get them on.
Then you could pop up in the background and wave.
At least, that is what I would do!

It’s classic. The guy turns me into a seventh grader. I’m like equally HORRIFIED AND FASCINATED. I’m desperate to see in – yet ACTUALLY AFRAID OF HIM. He’s not the friendliest individual shall we say? If he dies, it will SO be on the news.
Were you at the Mom Summit Conference?

I wish I had been at that conference. After reading what you had to say about Mom 2.0 on your blog, I will definitely be trying to make it out there next year. Sounds like it is not to be missed!
I yiyi, that show is too much. I watch for 3 minutes and I start cleaning the small drawer in the table next to the sofa.
Hope your week is good.

My husband and I watch the show reguarly. We just cannot understand the illness. It makes for good reality TV, but I feel sad for the Hoarders and their families.

Wait. Are you saying that hoarding is a bad thing?
I work very hard finding photos of other peoples houses to post on blog as mine.
I’m not ready to come out of the closet yet. I’m finding though that I don’t even want to leave my house to go events such as bloggy boot camp.
Help.
And, shhhh. Don’t tell anyone.

I think it’s a form of OCD. They keep everything. Everything has meaning or purpose (that would be exhausting). My gram (lived through the depression) had a bit of that.. she saved every Cool whip container or glass jar that she ever met. When she passed away the family found thousands of containers in her basement.

I swear that the generation who lived through the Depression holds onto certain habits. Take my grandmother, for example. After she has emptied out the contents of the potato chip bag, she washes it, turns it inside out, and then cuts up her raw meat on it.
I cannot even pretend to understand that one.

I think that’s brilliant. I hate using my cutting board for meat. I cannot use bleach in the house to clean anything. And I feel like raw chicken can’t be cleaned off well enough. And our water is a premium here in the summer. So I have used plastic bags, and chip bags to do this.
