Halloween Whore-er

Today I am participating in the Spooky Story Starters at Mama’s Losin’ It.  You can earn 5 extra entries in our Flip Ultra HD Video Camera if you link up with Mama Kat today!

I used to love Halloween.  I mean L-O-V-E  it!  I loved going to pick out our pumpkin in the scarecrow filled pumpkin patch at the Nut Tree.  Carving Jack-O-Lanterns, baking pumpkin seeds, and nibbling on candy were always highlights at our house too.  My sister, Mindy, and I would brainstorm our costume ideas in early July and we were lucky enough to have a mom who made them for us.  Not only was I really into my costume, (yes, I entered all the contests) but the thought of eating candy was almost too much for me to bear.

candy-2
The other eleven months in our house there was a strict no candy rule—so every October, Mindy and I literally counted down to the 31st.

Sadly, I’ve lost my loving feeling for Halloween.  At first, I didn’t know why.  However, it dawned on me while racking my brain on what to wear to school for our Halloween parade.  The costume choices for women at Halloween are  whore-en-dous!  Literally, they go from one extreme to the other.  You’re either showing your stuff:

Fallen-Angel-Costume
…or you are not:

gecko-costume
When did Halloween officially become an excuse to whore it up?  Did I miss the memo?  Although this costume is tempting…

snow-princess-costume

I wonder if my parent’s would appreciate their first grade teacher parading around the yard in that one?  Plus, it might make for a slightly awkward parent teacher conference, which are always held right after our parade.

Don’t ask.

Even more shocking are some of the costumes my students wear:

CH00629
Knee Socks and short skirts.  Really? Is it necessary for a 9 year old?

Sigh.

Surely, this is a sign that I’m getting old and set in my ways, but it doesn’t make it any less disappointing.  I guess next year I’ll should spend more time making my own costume than wasting my time making Emi’s.

****************************

Tomorrow is our last day of our countdown to Halloween!  If you are playing along, then get your posts ready for Lolli’s Eat, Drink, And Be Scary carnival.  Lolli wants to see what you are making in the kitchen. Show your devilish desserts, give us the scoop on pumpkins, or share your favorite holiday drink. If cooking isn’t your cup of tea, then tell us what you are doing with your leftover Halloween candy. Do you enjoy immediately, save for later, or just bribe your kids with it when needed?

And don’t forget to enter our contest to win a Flip Ultra HD Video Camera today!  Simply answer the below prompt in the comments field.  Be sure to answer the daily question on Mama Kat’s, Angie’s, and Lolli’s sites today for extra entries too.

Name a not-so-great costume worthy of being caught on camera.

My son mentioned that he wanted to be a baked potato have us wrap him all in tin foil. I think it is something he read in a storybook, but I can only imagine how uncomfortable he would be and how difficult it would be to keep him together through a night of trick or treating. I totally would have wanted to capture that on video. BTW, he’s going to be spider man instead…

I don’t have a good answer to your question. must need more coffee. I just have to agree with you on the whore-ing up of Halloween. One of the reasons I am teaching myself to sew my daughters costumes is because I could not believe some of the costumes for girls, that Minnie costume is tame compared to some of the. I don’t get why moms don’t see that and let their girls wear it. I was at a party this weekend and I actually thought the 9 year old was dressed as a prostitute (dog collar and all) when I realized that her skin tight, spaghetti strapped, hot pink dress was supposed to be a cat! So apparently I am getting old too!

The costume that I loved the most was from an adult costume party that my friends had last year. There, someone dressed up as Mario and Luigi (from Super Mario Brothers). I had never seen that before, at least not in my area, and thought it was great!! We also have the kids dressing inappropriately, especially when there is normally a good chance of snow by Halloween!

I, too, wonder about the tramped up costumes for the girls. Sadly, I guess that’s what sells, so that’s what we’re offered.

Not so great costume? A friend of mine’s half woman/half man costume. I think she wore it five years running.

Or…when people dress up as pregnant nuns. We had a friend dress up as one a few years ago. It’s funny but totally inappropriate.

I actually don’t like the gory costumes. I don’t want to see tons of blood or guts on anyone. I know it is terribly cheesy, but our family likes to dress up with a theme. I would love to capture on camera families all dressed up.

Amen, sister! I was just about to write a similar post about the “naughty” costume requirement. You can’t just be a nurse, you have to be a naughty nurse. Or you can’t just be a kitten, you have to be a naughty kitten. Well, all of us don’t do naughty all that well. Some of us just look like whores. Overweight, seriously-need-this-street-walking-gig-to-pay-my-rent type whores. Not the cute-I-strip-in-Vegas-cause-I’m-sexy type whores. And, to answer your question: I think my costume is the not so good one that should be caught on film because the fact that I’m even planning to dress up is film worthy as I’ve not done that since 8th grade. But, I’m not gonna tell you what it is in case I a)look like a fool and skip the pictures, b) skip it entirely b/c I’m too lazy to follow through, or c) contradict myself and decide to go as a naughty kitty:)

I so agree! What is the deal with the skimpy, nothing there costumes.
I think I would want to catch someone wearing the sexy nun costume that is out there on video than force them to show it to their religious leader.

There was a group of teenage girls that showed up at my house trick or treating last year that might of well been standing on the corner. I told them “it is a really good thing you are in a big group”.

Not so great costume: My mother tried to make my sister a spider costume one year, but none of the legs would stand out like in the magazine. So, she was dressed in black with 8 limp stockings hanging off her and no one could tell what she was (a bag lady?).

And the costumes…I am dismayed enough at the adult and teen costumes being so trashy. I had no idea that they’re marketing so little girls now! That’s pretty disgusting. Reminds me of 10 years ago (can’t believe it’s been that long!) when my sister was in 2nd grade and complained of her classmates “wanting to dress like teacher” and coming to class in knee-high boots, mini skirts, and sparkly tube-tops!
