I have a scar on my left knee. It is not as noticeable as it used to be, but it is still there.
I’m not even sure when it happened anymore, but I do remember how it came to be.
I was what I like to call an “imaginative” child. I believed in many things passionately: Santa Claus, that I would someday change the world, and marshmallows made everything in life better. I also believed I could fly.
It’s true. I was sure that if I closed my eyes and concentrated hard enough, then I would take flight. I even set out to prove my little theory one sunny day in our backyard. I climbed to the top of our deck and jumped down.
Shockingly, my Peter Pan and Tinkerbell moment never materialized. I simply ended up with a badly bloodied knee and a scar that would stay with me always. My self-confidence also suffered a temporary set-back.
I was reminded of this little event recently when my kids donned their superhero capes and started racing around our house, shouting that they were flying.
“Look, Mama, look.”
I guess sometimes things just don’t skip a generation.

They are so freaking cute! And I totally have “I believe I can fly” stuck in my head now. Thanks.

Oh this so reminds me of grade school when we would jump from the swings and feel like we were flying! It was such a joy and even today brings me a smile. I don’t know if I’d have the guts to let go and jump now.

My daughter always wants to hear her cape. She even has the superhero stance down, it is hilarious.

They are so cute.
And the belief that you can do anything is a great gift to pass down to your children.
Also, please tell me where you got those capes, I know some kids that would like to have some.

Too funny that you asked about where I got the capes, Jen. The capes were made by one of the women we worked with for the auction.

All of the capes are custom made. You just need to tell her what you want.
PS: Note the cape with the “S”!!!

Kids are so much luckier than we were. We all had to use old discarded towels and sheets and really any crap our moms didn’t care about. Geez, I’m starting to take offense. My mom didn’t love me…..

Oh my goodness, they are so precious! At least they were just running around the house and not jumping off the roof! I hope you showed them your scar and told them what could happen if they did something like that.

Cute little superheroes! Not a bad trait to pass on to your kids at all

I love that they have personalized capes. I know there’s probably a solid reason for that, but I imagine you lovingly making the capes and putting them aside for the time when your children might want to play superhero.
That being said, I’m totally making capes for mine. I’m sure there’s some way I can do so without any actual talent, or even fully opposable thumbs.

If only we could keep a little of that free spirit. But, self preservation is probably a better thing. Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! You are crazy, lady.
And, it scares me that you are learning of current events from my blog. Glad I am keeping you informed.

I can’t get over how nice their capes are. Did you have a nice cape like that? I’m sure that if you had a cape that was that nice you would not have a scar.

Those are seriously adorable capes!
I’ve got you beat, though. When I was a kid I DID fly (almost every night in my dreams). Oh, to be a kid again.
