Of course you know who he is.
One word says it all: MacGyver.
He redefined the 80s with his Swiss Army knife and preference for non-violent conflict resolution.
Didn’t we all love this show? There was nothing that MacGyver couldn’t save the world from in under an hour.
My life is a lot like MacGyver’s; the only differences being that I do not have a mullet and have never owned a brown leather bomber jacket.
Other than that, we’re practically the same person.
I use my MacGyver-like skillz whenever I can…especially when it comes to my kids.
If Giancarlo locks himself in the bathroom, I just run downstairs and grab a paperclip. After a few swift moves, Voila! My boy is released to freedom and all is right with the world again.
{Full disclosure: I may have taken the time to call my husband looking for advice on how to resolve the locked door situation, but whatev. Even MacGyver had to consult with Pete from time to time.)
Oh, and it doesn’t stop there. My husband took the three of us out to dinner last week. Like any parent, I tried to stifle a groan when the server mentioned they did not have paper and crayons. “We do have Wiki Stixs, though,” she said.
Bring it on, I replied.
I channeled my inner MacGyver and managed to keep my kids entertained for a solid half hour. We started with mere flowers and fish…

…but soon moved onto 3-D objects and Picasso-inspired modern art.
Note the similarities:

I am practically my own stunt person. Lord only knows what kind of damage I could do with a ballpoint pen, rubber band, tweezers, nasal spray, and a turkey baster.

lol. i loved ol’ Mac. Like serious. I vaguely remember something about marriage… but that was a long time ago! I loved this post. had a really good chuckle.

More restaurants should offer wiki stix…what a great idea. Thank goodness for MacGyver – he’s such an inspiration (loved that show when I was younger).

I wish some restaurants around here would keep something other than crayons! Dexy eats them and Princess gets bored. Maybe I need to bring our own Wiki Stix.

What memories that first picture brings back. I think he’s the reason I carried around foldable scissors in my purse and a can opener on my key chain through high school. Yeah, I was weird.

I love it! Your really struck a chord here, SITSta! Back in my pre-mommy, corporate days, my co-workers called me MacGyver. It is truly amazing how those skills really blossom in motherhood! I must say, i’m positively blown away by your Wiki-stick art. Holy smokes! You gonna be taking that show on the road for a gallery tour any time soon?

I learned a few things from this blog post:
1) I still love Wikistix (I had some ages ago and just reading the word made me I wish I still had them).
2) I should buy the MacGyver season DVDs, because it would be so cool to watch the show now that I am an adult and would “get” it.
3) Mothers are awesome.
4) Once we have children, we’ll need to carry crayons and colouring books with us when we go out.

Was there ever a Mrs. MacGyver? Because I bet if there was she was totally awesome, taught him everything he knew and could probably kick his ass…
P.S. Your Wiki creations were utterly amazing. May I suggest a showing at one of the local galleries?

Loved McGyver. He is an inspiration to us all looking for ways to get out of disastrous situations with only chewing gum, a credit card, and a bobby pin. Keeping crayons and paper on hand at all times would probably be a good thing too.

What a relief to find this out about you Fran. I am constantly locking myself in the bathrrom and was afraid I’d do the same when I come to visit you. Thank God you are my McGyver!
And what’s even better is an artistic McGyver, after you unlock the bathroom with your paper clip, you can sculpt me a piece of your 3-d art. That’d be great, thanks!
