Oh how I love getting holiday mail! My husband doesn’t bother getting the mail because it’s my job. Just like it’s his job to take out the recycling, it’s mine to get the mail. Equal partnership and chores at its finest. It boggles my mind when November 30th rolls around and I begin receiving the first of many holiday letters from my annoyingly organized family and friends. Really, how do they get it done right after Thanksgiving? I get the warm fuzzies looking at the smiling faces, seeing how kids have grown and reading the family letters.
Yet, if I’m being honest, I loathed taking holiday photos . Let me rephrase that, once I hit middle school, I loathed taking the family holiday photo. Every October the inevitable question would be asked to my sister and I, “What should we do for our holiday card?” “How about we take a normal picture this year!” I’d say. “What fun is that? “ was usually my mother’s reply. Let me explain. This, my friends, was one of my first holiday cards:
Although this card was undoubtedly a success (most likely due to my darling photo) it set up a dangerous precedence for the next year. How could my mom possibly top it? Here’s what followed the year after, with the lovely addition of my sister, Mindy:

Is this embarrassing me? Yes! Is it dating my age? Absolutely. Question: If my sister was Mindy, then was I supposed to be Mork? Hmmm…did Mork have pigtails? I think not, but my mom was not concerned with such petty details–she honed in on the photo and tried to craft the perfect phrase. And so the many years of holidays cards continued, or rather continues. To spare me from further discomfort, here is a snippet of the past 33 plus years of holiday cards created by my dear mother.
Naturally, we are not sending a card out this year. I simply cannot get it together. Interestingly enough my daughter is not being fully cooperative when it comes to taking her photo.
Perhaps she is much smarter than I give her credit for, and sees where this is going.

I am really impressed that you (your mom) still have all those past xmas cards. My parents would do a group photo and we were in whatever uniform we were wearing at the time – brownies, girl scouts, gymnastics leotard, and my personal unfavorite, the band uniforms. I plan on continuing the family photo tradition, minus the uniforms. Happy Xmas card giving/receiving!
