Last week was my official spring vacation. Nine whole wonderful days without 20 first graders, calling me “teacher”, tattling on their friends, and asking me questions all at the same time. Bliss! Today, I asked my students to reflect in their journals about their spring vacation. They had to write 5 “good” sentences for me about their time off. Had I written a reflection of my own, it would have gone someting like this:
5 things I learned about Emi (aka Terror) over my spring vacation:
1. Playdates are my friend. This is my new mantra. Emi and I had three fab-u-lous playdates in one week! This, my friends, is going to be a necessity in order to keep my sanity over summer vacation.
2. Emi, much to my dismay, likes to play in the sand. The horror!
3.The Cherry Blossom Festival used to be one of my favorite activities in San Franciso. However, the Cherry Blossom Festival with Emi in a stroller = no fun for mom, grandma, & auntie.
4. Emi is a strange little girl.
5. Teaching 20 children is almost easier than spending a day with my daughter.

Oh, Kacey, as a former teacher, I can so relate to your last picture.
I could spend 6 hours trapped in a classroom with 20 screaming fifth graders, and still emerge with my sanity. But just 1 hour with my own children, and I’m halfway to the loony bin.

Emi looks sweet in the sand! The last time my 3 year old was in the sand, he laid down and made “Sand Angels”!!! You can imagine- he had sand all over his body.

I so agree with Lori! I’m a former first grader teacher, and I always say that 29 (we had far too many in a class if you ask me) first graders are way easier than my own two little rascals. I’m with you on the sand, too. I rarely let my boys get into the neighbors’ sand box…yuck!

Too funny! I have two young ones and playdates are amazing…if you have a similar parenting style as the other parent. Last summer, playdates were my sanity!

Emi is so cute! How old is she? She looks about the same age as my Emma–Emma is 18months. She’s beginning to get a.mind.of.her.own. Oh, and what’s wrong with sand?

Sand – so not my friend. This probably puts me in Bad Mommy book, but we don’t have a sandbox because it belongs ON THE BEACH!
I taught 7th grade for 9 years. My husband could never understand how I had more patience when I taught than while at home!!!

I have worked in the classroom for many years now…first as a pre-k teacher, then kindergarten… now I “just” sub. I’m always ready for a break myself, when one rolls around–but then having to entertain my girls..makes me ready for school again. So I can definitely relate!

Emi is a cutie! And yes… sand is a fact of life, my son is 8 and has not stopped with the sand. Keep telling yourself she’s building up her immune system!
Is it a girl thing? My daughter tends to need a lot of focus and one-on-one time – or NOT – depending on her whims. I can get ‘full’ fast, but sometimes, she wants to be alone, NO playdates… it’s hard to tell a friend who keeps calling for a playdate, ‘sorry, but she really does not want to play right now’, even though she likes the little girl, and forcing the issue would make for a miserable time.

Haha – I used to teach preschool and always thought, hey, after working with 35 3&4 year olds, the parenting thing is gonna be a piece of cake. Hmmm… joke's on me.
