Confession: I used to be a PC girl. I made fun of those who gave into the Apple marketing, inevitably paying twice as much as they needed to for a computer. Even after I received my first iPod, I taunted the person helping me at the “genius bar” in their store. If it was such a great product, then why was there always such a long wait to get help with repairs? Are that many broken?” (Note to self: Do not taunt the “genius worker” until after he/she has fixed your iPod. For some reason, your name gets put to the end of the line.)

In any event, after my PC died within a year of purchase, my husband snidely suggested I try an Apple laptop and I haven’t looked backed since. Naturally, my next purchase was the iPhone. I LOVE this phone. Not only because it allows me to eat out in peace while Emi watches a Yo Gabba Gabba episode, but it also lets me check my e-mail on the go.
The main reason I adore this phone is for it’s applications or apps. Plain and simple, I’m an apps addict.

Emi loves Peekaboo Barn, Cute Math, and the interactive Wheels on the Bus. In fact, earlier this year, I forgot to pack Emi’s sound machine and within minutes I found an app on my phone for free. Needless to say, everyone got their sleep that night!

However, being an apps expert, I feel it’s my duty to suggest some new ideas. Here are my top apps wish list:
1. Danger Alert Status: I appreciate that the government issued color signals to alert us as to the terrorist threat level – it lets us know if we should be moderately terrified to go about our daily business or just mildly terrified to go about our daily business. I’d love an app to forewarn me of the likelihood and degree of danger for Emi as she attempts new feats of strength on the playground. She consistently overestimates her physical capabilities, and yet detests any shadowing I do, let alone assistance I offer. Go away Mommy, she’ll say, as I hover over her like an LAPD chopper.
A few examples of what I have envisioned:
Yellow Alert – She’s on the three foot slide, potential bruise and whimpering.
Red Alert – Climbing the jungle tower while trying to eat a pretzel!
2. Baby book: Who in the hell has time for a baby book anymore? Give me an app that let’s me check off a milestone and records the day and then magically uploads all the information into a baby book. Emi eats paste…check.
3. Silencer: To be used anytime your child is throwing a tantrum or your husband is telling you about the latest NBA trade.
If anyone has any connections to Apple, feel free to send my ideas. I only ask for 10% of the final profits they make from by ideas. I’d also settle for an iPad.

I’m so into apps too!! I’m gonna check out the ones that you suggested…if I can manage to eat a meal out in peace and quiet, I’m all for it. Usually my kids all end up fighting over mine and my hubby’s Iphones to the point where we just turn them off and hide them.
I love the idea of the Silencer…and the baby book one is completely ingenius!

It is wrong for your child to have a better computer than you, my friend. After all, you are the one “working” on the computer all day long, no?
I think it is high time for a switch.

We got an iMac two years ago and since then I’ve been hinting strongly that I need a macbook. My husband sure is stubborn and I would love an iphone. Can I piggyback on your deal if Apple calls?
You need to check out smacktalk for the kids – looks like fun!

Now those are some good App ideas!! I don’t have the iPhone but do have the iPod touch and LOVE it. I too am an app addict, just ask my husband.
And yes, people always think Macs are so expensive, but by the time you will build a PC with similar properties, features, compare the prices then.. and then a Mac is still just so much cooler. Apple just doesn’t build cheap crappy computers like most of the other companies.
We are definitely getting the iPad in March

My image of you is shattered. Please rectify this situation immediately.

I am not into Apps but Hubby is, he tries to get me to add them to my Blackberry ALL THE TIME! I just haven’t figured out how to work so much on a phone. I’m a nerd but a totally inept one when it comes to my phone.

You and me both, Beth. It drives my husband nuts that I haven’t even added my contracts to my iPhone. I use it for two things: 1) e-mail and 2) Twitter.
What else is there?

I like the silencer application. A lot.
All it took for me to change from a PC user to Mac was getting an ipod touch. Rocked my world.

Hi! Just discovered you blog from the Parents Connect site. Love it!
Apple products have taken over in our house as well. My husband (a computer engineer) was ardently a PC guy and then got curious and got a MacBook Pro as his work computer. We are in loooove with it. I don’t think we could ever go back. Love our iPhones, too. Not sure how we functioned before them.
Those are some great ideas for new apps. Maybe you should talk to some programmers about developing those- especially the danger alert level!

I couldn’t agree more. So glad that we were able to connect through ParentsConnect!
Oh, and about developing the apps that Kacey mentioned here, didn’t you say something about your husband being an engineer?
[Reply]
I need that app that alerts you when your husband is on the way home from work. That way I can quickly clean the house, change the kids out of their pajamas and otherwise look as if I’ve been more than semi-productive while he was at work.
They have GPS right?
(note to self: By iPhone first!)

Best. Idea. Ever.
I am definitely adding this to the list of things that Kacey needs to develop.
Don’t worry, though. We’ll totally give you a share of the profits. You’re good with 90% / 10%, yes?

I converted to Mac about 2 years ago. And I do use the term converted purposely. It is a religious connection I’ve got with my computer. Heaven knows I spend enough time on it. It is painful now to work on my Windows laptop. Painful.
PS–I am currently saving Amazon credit to buy myself a new iPod touch. I need one.

I come from a Mac family. My dad is hardcore. He has vanity plates “macdady”. True story. But I married a pc guy. Because he loves to tinker around with the innards and you just can’t do that with a Mac. Sigh. Maybe someday I’ll bring him around. In the meantime, we just got iPhones a few weeks ago. We’re gaga, over the moon for them. Maybe this will help sell him on getting me that Macbook I covet.

I love that there is a division in your family over computer camps. Your dad subscribes to Apple and your husband to PC. I was amazed that you were able to bring the iPhones into your house.
You are a powerful and persuasive woman.

I feel the same about Apple products and will totally back your new app ideas. I am anxiously awaiting release of the iPad – my next Apple purchase.

I’m an app addict, too. I’m sure my husband wishes they would make a Silence Button just so he wouldn’t have to hear me go on about the cool app I found to track every calorie I ate today
